Pest control in South Haven, MI
VexGuard Pest Control serves South Haven homes and lake cottages from Kalamazoo, about 45 minutes away. I handle mosquitoes and ticks off the Black River and the dunes, spiders on lake-facing siding, mice in cottages closed up for winter, and yellow jackets in blueberry season.
What I see in South Haven
Hi, I’m Scott. South Haven is a Lake Michigan town first, and the pests follow the water and the calendar. Most of my calls here come from a few places: houses near the Black River, cottages along North Shore Drive and the South Beach side of town, and homes that back up to the woods out toward Van Buren State Park.
Spiders on the lake side of the house
Lakefront and river homes collect spider webs on the side that faces the water. Porch lights and the lake pull in clouds of small flying insects on summer nights, and spiders set up wherever that food lands: eaves, deck railings, boathouses and window frames. Knocking webs down only buys a week. Treating the eaves, siding and entry points, and cutting back what draws the insects in, keeps the webs from coming right back.
Mosquitoes and ticks along the river and the dunes
The Black River winds through town to the lake, and the low ground beside it holds water after every rain. That is mosquito country from late spring on. Ticks wait in the wooded dunes and along trail edges, including the western end of the Kal-Haven Trail. My mosquito and tick program runs about nine treatments, every 21 days, April through September, aimed at the shaded shrubs and tree lines where they rest.
Seasonal cottages and fall mice
A cottage that sits closed from October to May is exactly what a mouse is looking for: quiet, dry, and full of nesting material. I set snap traps and bait before you close up, check the garage and crawlspace, and come back for a winter service if you’re on Home Defense. Damp cottage wood around old porches and window sills is also where I find carpenter ants in spring.

Home Defense is how most of my lakeshore customers stay covered: a general pest treatment every quarter, a winter service, and free callbacks if something shows up between visits. Mice and rats get snap traps and bait, with two garage bait stations at the first visit, and carpenter ants are covered too. It’s billed monthly.

Do you really come out to South Haven from Kalamazoo?
Yes. South Haven is part of my regular service area, about 45 minutes west of Kalamazoo. Homes in town, along North Shore Drive, and out into South Haven, Casco and Covert townships are all in range. If you’re farther out, call (269) 353-1727 and I’ll tell you straight.
Can you treat a cottage I only use in the summer?
Yes. I can schedule around when you open and close the place, and I don’t need you there for exterior work. Before you close up in the fall, I set traps and bait for mice so you don’t open the door to a mess in May.
Why is the lake side of my house covered in spider webs?
Because that’s where the food is. The water and your lights draw in swarms of small flying insects, and spiders build where those insects land. Treating the eaves and siding and changing what draws the insects in works better than sweeping webs every week.
Do you treat mosquitoes near the Black River?
Yes. Yards near the river and low, wet ground get the most pressure. My mosquito and tick program is about nine treatments, every 21 days, April through September. In2Care traps are also available as a separate, non-spray option.
Do you remove yellow jacket nests during blueberry season?
Yes. Late summer is when yellow jackets get aggressive around fruit, picnic tables and garbage cans. I treat nests in the ground, in siding and soffits, in wall voids and in attics. Honeybees are different; I refer those to a beekeeper.
