Pest control in Otsego, MI
VexGuard Pest Control serves Otsego and Otsego Township from Kalamazoo, about 25 minutes away. This is an old paper-mill town on the Kalamazoo River, and I treat it that way: mice in older homes, ticks and mosquitoes in the river bottoms and woodlots, and carpenter ants in damp wood.
Pests in a river and mill town
Hi, I’m Scott. Otsego grew up around the Kalamazoo River, first as a mineral-springs resort and then as a paper-mill town. A lot of the houses near downtown went up during those years, and the river still runs right past them from Farmer Street to Brookside Park.
Mice in older homes
Older houses settle, and the gaps around old foundations, utility lines and porches are exactly what mice look for once the weather turns. Most Otsego mouse calls I get are in October and November. I set snap traps and bait in the basement, garage and attic, and the Home Defense plan adds two garage bait stations at the first visit.
Ticks and mosquitoes in the river bottoms
West of town, the river spreads into wooded bottoms and wetland on its way toward Lake Allegan, and Pine Creek comes up from the south to join it. Township lots that back up to those woods see more ticks than in-town yards. I aim yard treatments at the tree line and tall grass where ticks wait, and at the shaded spots where mosquitoes rest.
Carpenter ants and the damp side of the house
River humidity, big shade trees and old wood add up to carpenter ants. Look for winged ants inside in spring or fine sawdust under a window sill or deck board. Home Defense covers carpenter ants, or I can do a one-time carpenter ant treatment.

Do you come out to Otsego?
Yes. Otsego is about 25 minutes from Kalamazoo, and the city and Otsego Township are part of my regular service area. Call (269) 353-1727 if you’re not sure your road is in range.
Why do I get mice every fall?
When the fields are harvested and the nights get cold, mice move toward buildings, and older homes have more ways in. Traps and bait placed where they actually travel, and a winter check, keep them from settling in.
My yard backs up to the woods. Am I going to have more ticks?
Usually, yes. Ticks wait in tall grass and leaf litter at the edge of the woods. Treating that strip, and keeping the grass short between the woods and where you spend time, makes a real difference.
Do you treat the inside of the house too?
Yes, when it’s needed. Most general pest work starts on the outside, where pests get in. I treat inside for things like mice, carpenter ants and spiders that are already there.
