Pest control in Mattawan, MI
VexGuard Pest Control serves Mattawan and Antwerp Township, about 15 minutes west of Kalamazoo on I-94. Here I spend most of my time on ticks from the wetlands and woods, yellow jackets nesting in lawns, and mice coming in from the farm fields in the fall.
What I see around Mattawan
Hi, I’m Scott. Mattawan is close enough to Kalamazoo that I’m out here often, but it doesn’t act like a city neighborhood. Subdivisions sit next to farm fields, orchards and a lot of wetland, and that mix shows up in the calls I get.
Ticks from the fens and woodlots
Antwerp Township holds the headwaters of the Paw Paw River: spring-fed lakes, prairie fen and wet woods. That’s great habitat for deer, and deer carry ticks into backyards. If your lot backs up to woods or wetland, the edge of the yard is where I focus.
Yellow jackets in the lawn
Late summer brings a call I hear a lot from Mattawan families: someone mowed over a hole in the yard and got stung. Ground-nesting yellow jackets like sunny lawns, ball-field edges and the gaps under landscape timbers. I treat ground nests, and nests in siding, soffits and play sets, so the yard is usable again.
Mice from the fields
Once the orchards and fields around the village are picked and harvested, mice move toward garages and basements. Snap traps and bait, set where they travel, handle it. On the Home Defense plan, I add two garage bait stations at the first visit and come back for a winter service.

How fast can you get to Mattawan?
Mattawan is about 15 minutes from Kalamazoo, so it’s one of the easier places for me to fit in. Stinging insects are usually same or next day; routine service is usually within the week.
I mowed over a yellow jacket nest. What should I do?
Stay away from the hole and keep kids and pets off that part of the yard. Don’t pour gasoline in it or try to block it. Call me and I’ll treat the nest. Ground nests are some of the most common stinging insect calls I get out here.
We back up to the woods. Can you keep the ticks down?
Yes. I treat the edge where your lawn meets the woods or tall grass, which is where ticks wait. Keeping that strip mowed short helps too.
Do you service Antwerp Township outside the village?
Yes. The village, the subdivisions around it and Antwerp Township are all in my regular service area.
