Pest control in Schoolcraft, MI
VexGuard Pest Control serves Schoolcraft and the farm country around it, about 20 minutes south of Kalamazoo on US-131. Out on Prairie Ronde, most of my work is mice coming in from the fields, wasps under eaves and in outbuildings, and ants and spiders in older village homes.
Pest control on Prairie Ronde
Hi, I’m Scott. Schoolcraft is one of the oldest settlements in Kalamazoo County, founded on the edge of Prairie Ronde, the big round prairie the first settlers farmed. That history means old houses and a lot of farmland, and both shape what I see here.
Field mice when the harvest comes in
Open farmland in every direction means a lot of mice in the fall. When the corn and beans come off, they lose their cover and head for the nearest warm building: garages, basements, pole barns and older homes with loose gaps around the foundation. I set snap traps and bait where they actually run, and the Home Defense plan adds garage bait stations and a winter service.
Wasps in eaves, barns and sheds
There aren’t many tall trees out on the prairie, so paper wasps and yellow jackets build on buildings instead: eaves, soffits, barn rafters, sheds and swing sets. Bald-faced hornets hang their nests in the few trees and shrubs there are. I handle all of them, and I come out same or next day when someone’s getting stung.
Ants and spiders in older village homes
Older homes in the village have more cracks, older sills and more places for ants and spiders to get in. A perimeter treatment each quarter keeps most of them outside where they belong.

Do you service Schoolcraft and the townships around it?
Yes. Schoolcraft is about 20 minutes south of Kalamazoo. The village, Schoolcraft Township and Prairie Ronde Township are all in my regular service area.
Can you treat a pole barn or outbuilding?
Yes. For mice I’ll set traps and bait in barns, garages and sheds as well as the house, and I treat wasp nests in barn rafters and eaves. For a large farm building, call and describe it so I can plan the visit.
Why do I get so many mice every fall?
Harvest. When the fields around Schoolcraft are cut, mice lose their food and cover all at once and move toward buildings. The best time to get ahead of it is late September, before they’re settled in.
Do you treat bald-faced hornet nests?
Yes. Bald-faced hornets build the big gray paper nests in trees and shrubs, and they defend them hard. Don’t try to knock one down. Call me and I’ll treat it.
